Artisan Spotlight - A Catlike Curiosity

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1.      What do you sell in your shop? Art, cards, jewellery and textiles pieces. Everything I sell features my art work in some way - you can purchase originals, prints, necklaces, cards and ornaments all with the same art work featured :)

2.      What is your favorite thing about etsy? The community - so many lovely sellers all willing and wanting to support each other.

3.      What is your least favorite thing about etsy? The fees I think - they really add up. Also, it can be hard to get your store noticed as it is such a huge site.

4.      What does your studio/workspace look like? You can see lots of my workspace pics each Wednesday on the blog. I love to share the behind the scenes work with people. It encourages me to be nice and tidy too :)

5.      What do you do to relax? I create art, crochet, stroke my kitties, watch detective shows and cuddle MHI (My Handsome Irishman).

6.      What accomplishments are you the most proud of? I am proud to have reached the 1000 followers mark, proud to have settled into our lovely home and proud to have a store stocked to the brim with curious goodies.

7.      What are some of your goals for the next year? My goals for next year are to expand my sales via Etsy and to introduce a completely new venture for me. I'll give you some clues - it will include an inbuilt community, access to lots of lovely printables and much, much more :)

Artisan Spotlight - Antiquity Travelers

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...
Cynthia of Antiquity Travelers

What do you sell in your shop? I sell jewelry. It is all handmade using items like semi-precious stones, pearls, shells, art glass, enamels or the occasional beachcombing item like sea glass. I use gold, silver and copper earwires as I have allergies to base metals, and so I swear by not using them for the items I create.  I rarely duplicate an item as I create each piece as an artistic outlet.

What is your favorite thing about etsy?  I love the ease of being able to set up a shop to sell my jewelry, but still continue to create and run everything out of my home. I don’t think I would have ever built up a following like this, or so quickly if I had needed to build my own website.

What is your least favorite thing about etsy? The fees, of course. I’m lucky that this is a hobby for me, and I don’t need to focus on the margins. I am just trying to afford my bead-a-holic tendencies so I can buy more beautiful beads! But because this is a hobby for me (I have a day job) I also don’t have as much time to dedicate to pushing sales volume in my Etsy Shop. So the fees rack up, without the offsetting of sales.

What does your studio/workspace look like?  Originally I had taken over a corner of the living room with all my bead tins and baskets of supplies. But about a year ago, I cleaned out the kid’s playroom and took over part of that room … complete with a table that seats 6! So I have lots of space to spread out. But honestly, it usually just means my mess gets bigger!

What do you do to relax?  If I’m not hanging out with my kids, then you’ll find me beading! I love to make jewelry. Some people knit to relax, I don’t knit. But I do find it relaxing to bead weave.

What accomplishments are you the most proud of? Well, if we’re talking about my jewelry, then I would say that I’ve recently had my first published design in Stringing magazine. I’ve submitted a few more pieces and I’m hoping that another design or two might make it into a magazine. Fingers crossed!

What are some of your goals for the next year?  I have an idea for a book series, and so I’m hoping that I’ll get the chance to ‘pitch’ the idea to a publisher. Who knows what might happen!

Artisan Spotlight - Oh Nostalgia

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1. What do you sell in your shop? Well, I actually have two of them. The one I used to join BBA is called Oh Nostalgia and it features vintage-inspired jewelry and a few home gifts. It's basically the hip, younger sister of my original shop, Little White Chapel, which sells wedding jewelry.

2. What is your favorite thing about etsy? There are so many things I like about it. The community is probably numer one and I've made some great friends because of it, but I also like having my shops on a well-known site with name recognition.  The whole setup is much easier (and cheaper!) than having my own website, that's for sure.

3. What is your least favorite thing about etsy? Sometimes it can be cliquey. And I don't like the curated landing pages for certain categories because I think they're misleading, but that's another rant for another day.

4. What does your studio/workspace look like? Most of the time it's messy. Before I went back to school I was a lot better about keeping it clean, but now that I have another plate to spin it tends to stay cluttered. (Oh well.) In terms of space, it's great. It's a small room but since I make small things, it works out. We recently put up a cork wall above my work station, and I plan to get a TV in there sometime this year so I don't have to keep dragging my beads to the family room when a large order rolls through.

5. What do you do to relax? I do all sorts of things. Watch TV or movies with my husband, read books, decorate my house, have wine-and-cheese nights with my friends, try new restaurants, travel...

6. What accomplishments are you the most proud of? I still get a little misty-eyed thinking about it: quitting my day job. I opened my first shop in the fall of 2009 with a $30 bead purchase. Two years later I was earning as much making jewelry as I was going to work, so I pulled the plug and became my own boss. Granted, I'm not rolling around on a pile of money or anything, but I make a decent living and I got here without taking on any debt. It was a lot of hard work and planning, but totally worth it and I'm so proud of my little company.

7. What are some of your goals for the next year? I still love both shops but now that I've been married for a few years, I'm getting interested in other things and want to take some of the focus off of my wedding line. I'd also like to think of a few more non-jewelry products for Oh Nostalgia, but I'm not sure what yet. (Maybe some prints? I don't know.) Ultimately I'd like my company to become more of a lifestyle brand, but that's not going to happen this year unless I learn how to clone myself or time travel.

Artisan Spotlight - Stalking the Wild Snark

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1. What do you sell in your shop? My shop started with a few knotwork items made in rope. I made these items using traditional maritime knots I learned when I used to sail on wooden ships. One day, I got the idea to shrink them by using thread instead of rope and my nautical knot earrings were born.

Today, most of my items either contain something nautical, something recycled, or something found in nature. I have jewelry, home decor pieces, and a smattering of other items.

2. What is your favorite thing about etsy? There are many things I enjoy about etsy, but I think what I like most is its professional appearance and the ease with which I can create a professional-looking shop using etsy.

3. What is your least favorite thing about etsy? I'm not complaining because etsy offers fantastic opportunities, but I wish fees were lower, even a little bit. A 20 cent listing fee doesn't seem like a lot, but if you make something small that shouldn't cost much, having to account for that 20 cents can really bump up the price of something/cut into what you make.

4. What does your studio/workspace look like? I live in an apartment, so I converted the dining area into my workspace. It gets decent natural light and opens straight into the kitchen, which is where I do my metal working. Two wire shelves above my desk hold a lot of my supplies, and three big plastic drawers next to/under my desk hold everything else.

5. What do you do to relax? I do my best thinking when I'm running or biking. The repetitive motion keeps my body occupied, allowing my mind to be free. It's almost like some strange form of meditation for me.

6. What accomplishments are you the most proud of? They don't get as much love online as they do in person at shows or the local shop where I sell my jewelry, but I really like my knotwork earrings. As far as I know, I invented the idea - I've never seen anything else exactly like them.

7. What are some of your goals for the next year? I am finishing up my master's and have to student teach during the fall 2013 semester. Student teaching is a full time job without pay. I've been saving for it and I can use student loan money to pay my rent and feed myself, but I am very anti debt. I would like to make enough online by next fall to cover at least half of my monthly expenses so I can minimize the amount I need to borrow.

Artisan Spotlight - Peri Dot by Duni

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1.      What do you sell in your shop?  I sell my own line in sleepwear for women as well as popular lifestyle products such as laundry bags, sleep masks and cosmetic pouches. All of my items are my own design and entirely handmade by me!

2.      What is your favorite thing about etsy? I love the layout and simplicity of uploading items. I also love that I'm able to sell to customers all over the world. I think the teams are a great idea and I enjoy "meeting" and getting to know other artisans.

3.      What is your least favorite thing about etsy? I honestly have nothing to complain about Etsy.

4.      What does your studio/workspace look like? cramped. In fact I'm thinking of moving my studio into our large living space (which barely gets any use!). That would help a lot since I require a bigger cutting table. I hope to implement this plan this year!

5.      What do you do to relax? I love reading. I also enjoy interacting with my pets. I find that very relaxing. Other things that relax me are decorating the house, drinking tea and talking to close friends :)

6.      What accomplishments are you the most proud of? I'm most proud of setting up and running my two shops single-handedly, being the sole investor and not relying on any bank loans. I'm also quite proud of my great customer relations!

7.      What are some of your goals for the next year?My overall goal for my Peridot line is to build up inventory while keeping to the basic styles. I'd rather offer a larger variety in colour than diversify the styles.

Artisan Spotlight -- PoppyHill Creations

7 Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

 1. What do you sell in your shop? I have two Etsy shops. At PoppyHill Creations I sell digital art and printables ranging from scrapbook papers and clip art to diy party supplies such as invitations, cupcake accessories, and banners - all digital graphics of course.

At PoppyHill Baby I sell baby gifts. Right now the majority of my items are what I like to call diaper creations - diaper cakes and diaper motorcycles. I've also recently started to sell my tummy time quilts, something I've been making for the past five years for close friends and family.

2. What is your favorite thing about Etsy? I love that I can sell from home and that if I ever have a question I can jump onto one of my team threads and ask. I have learned so much from my teammates and have really found a sense of camaraderie. It's been a really positive experience.

3. What is your least favorite thing about Etsy? Getting found and finding the right tags. I'm still learning what works and what doesn't. It's very frustrating. Thankfully, something must be working because my views have increased over the past month to averaging around 50 per day...finally!I'm open to any advice on how to find good tags for products.

4. What does your studio/workspace look like? Usually a mess...ha! When I'm working on my graphics, the mess isn't so bad. Just paper, pattern books, and printouts all over my computer space. I tend to draw a lot of things out by hand before I scan them in and touch them up or detail them with photoshop/illustrator. However, if I have an order for a diaper creation, or if I'm sewing then you might as well forget about walking in my workspace. There is usually fabric, diapers, ribbon and all kinds of baby supplies strewn about as I assemble products for shipping. All of my listed items for PoppyHill Baby are housed in storage bins in my closet in my loft. Yeah, I could do one of those things where I say something will "look similar" to this item and purchase supplies on an as needed basis. But, I prefer that my customer knows exactly what they are going to get when they make the purchase. So, that means I use up storage space. It's okay though...I have a system...LOL!

5. What do you do to relax? Spending time with my two kids - ages 3 and 15-months - and I guess my hubby too...just kidding. Of course, I love spending time with him! I especially love introducing my boys to new mediums and watching them create their own kind of art. My favories right now are dry erase crayons. No mess! How could I not love them? I'm also a TV and movie junkie. So, when I'm not spending time with the fam or crafting, I'm probably watching something on TV or I'm at the movies (though I don't get out to the movies near as often as I like). In fact, come September I'll be eagerly awaiting the new and returning fall premieres. This year I'm especially excited because I'll be posting critiques on my blog for the first time!

6. What accomplishments are you the most proud of? Definitely my family. They are the best thing that I have ever done and I'm so grateful to have such wonderful kids and a loving husband that take care of my like they do. I only hope that I'm as good to them as they are to me. I'm also really, really proud of my Etsy shops. They have given me so much confidence in my artwork! It still catches me off guard when I have people tell me how cute a diaper motorcycle is or how lovely one of my quilts are, or how well a paper pack worked in someone else's creation. It's wonderful to be appreciated for something that you have a passion to do!

7. What are some of your goals for the next year? There is a lot of goals that I have set for myself in each shop. My number one goal is to grow my views and my sales for both of my shop. I know that building a shop, let alone two shops, takes time, but I feel like as long as I'm persistent I can accomplish this goal. In PoppyHill Creations I'd like my views to reach 150+ per day and I've set a sales goal of 100 sales by the end of 2012.

In PoppyHill Baby I'd like to grow my quilt line. This is my slower shop as I spend more time on the graphics shop, but I'd like to see views increase to 60+ per day and sales to 35 by the end of 2012.

Artisan Spotlight -- Aliferous Express

7 questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1.      What do you sell in your shop?
Right now my shop has a variety of digital downloads... scrapbook papers, greeting card, scrabble tile and ATC images. A few other things as well and I'm not sure if everything is going to end up staying but for now, I enjoy all sorts of projects so I will either continue the variety, split some off when that sections grows, or nix whatever is not doing well. It's still evolving.

2.      What is your favorite thing about etsy?
I love the community and having a place to sell your handmade things without all the upfront costs. I've always been more of a 'mom & pop' shopper so with having fewer and fewer of those stores in your own town, this makes me feel like the future of the mom & pop shop. It allows those brick and mortar storefronts that have disappeared to return in a new, updated way. For the most part, if you shop on Etsy, you're getting something from a small business person and supporting people in their craft.
3.      What is your least favorite thing about etsy?
I really don't think it's as user-friendly as it could be. I feel like the front page could be utilized far better. The navigation could also use an overhaul if you ask me. For instance, when you view an item in someone's store, you don't have all links to all places or pages of that person's store. You have to go to the storefront or the store's profile page to get certain links to show up.

4.      What does your studio/workspace look like?
Somewhat messy at times but I don't let it get too out of hand because that overwhelms me and makes my brain cluttered. I have a large room in my attic that has walkout windows so there's lots of light.

This is my corner where I have all my storage, my computer and my supplies for jewelry making. It used to be far more cluttered with photos, postcards and my own art, but when I decided to put my digital work back online, I cleaned up and decided to start fresh. Right behind my desk I have a small table that I clear off when I want to do tangible art projects.

Believe it or not, my supply closet is always organized! I know... I'm a freak. lol. But when it's not, my head explodes. I'm way calmer and at peace when I know where things are.

5.      What do you do to relax?
A lot of different things actually. I love watching movies, reading, and I'm usually always refreshed and relaxed after the weekends. I have a wonderful group of friends and spending time with them riding and then hanging out at one of the houses for good food, drinks and an abundance of laughter keeps me sane. Those times make Mondays not so horrible. :)
6.      What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
I think I'm most proud of having been a successful small-business owner in the past and proud that I'm finally getting down to business and trying again. I'm fortunate in that I like and do have some talent in different areas, so I never get bored, but then other days I find it hard to concentrate on one thing. Either way, I am proud that I can do more than just one thing... and that it's all self-taught.

7.      What are some of your goals for the next year?
To finalize what I will keep and/or split off into another Etsy store. Grow it so that there is an abundance of items to choose from, and I've always wanted to continue making downloads that are useful for journals, date books, organizational type DIY stuff with pics and fun sections so it's not your boring black& white yearly planner... as well as getting back into my wreath designs before fall/winter set in. I have other thoughts in my head but I'm trying to make myself concentrate on those things first.

Artisan Spotlight -- Pasque Flower Creations

7 questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1.  What do you sell in your shop?
My Etsy shop, Pasque Flower Creations, is an eclectic mix of fun and functional handcrafted fabric items.  My current best sellers are boutique oven mitts:
I also welcome custom orders.

2.  What is your favorite thing about Etsy?
I love the sense of community --- a person-to-person connection between Buyers and Sellers and within teams.

3.  What is your least favorite thing about Etsy?
SEO.  I still struggle to find the best titles and tags to get my items found.  But I'm learning!

4.  What does your studio / workspace look like?
I converted stepson Jon's bedroom (he's 37 and happily married with three kids -- he's not moving home) into a Girl Cave to house my fabrics, supplies, sewing machine, serger, and inventory closet.  I like to keep my stash fabrics in rainbow color order.  (It's messier now than when the photo was taken.)

5.  What do you do to relax?
Ironically, I sew to relax!  (My hubby says I am always calmer when I'm touching fabric.)  I love to quilt and I am a member the Lincoln Quilters Guild and a small quilt group. I'm currently working on a full-sized English paper pieced quilt.  I've finished 100 large blocks.  It's been in the works for well over a year: http://pasqueflowerponderings.blogspot.com/2011/06/ugliest-quilt-in-world.html   I'm also working on a hand-appliqued graduation quilt for our oldest granddaughter (Class of 2013).  I also like to bike, read, and spend time with my children and 9 grandchildren.

6.  What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
I am most proud of my children.
In my former professional life as an attorney I helped blaze some trails for women in the legal profession in South Dakota in the late 1970s and 1980s.  I was SD Woman Attorney of the Year in 1985, and I was the first woman appointed to the SD Board of Pardons & Paroles.  I received an award from former Attorney General Janet Reno -- that photo and my parole gavel (which I now use to hammer metal capped snaps)  is in my Girl Cave.  (That's a much younger me in the yellow silk suit.)

 7.  What are some of your goals for the next year?
My goals are to maintain 100+ listings in my Etsy shop (I'm not quite there yet) and to double my 2011 sales total in 2012 (I'm ahead of target on that one!)  I'm also working on developing new product lines that will utilize my ever-growing pile of scraps (too pretty to throw away).

Artisan Spotlight -- JN Originals

Seven questions is our spotlight of our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

Judy of JN Originals!
1. What do you sell in your shop?

I have three active shops, with a fourth shop, Dancing Thimble, in the works. At JN Originals, I sell crocheted and felted personal accessories. At Mister PenQuin, I sell paper-crafted gifts, accents and accessories. At 2nd Chance Treasures, I sell recycled supplies for crafts and stitching.

2. What is your favorite thing about Etsy?

Besides the fact that I don't have to leave my home to sell handcrafted items, I think the best thing about Etsy is the comradery that is available once you join a team. You can go it alone, but I believe that the best teams provide encouragement, challenge you to up your game, and create networking opportunities.

3. What is your least favorite thing about Etsy?

You cannot sell anything, obviously, if you don't list it. Sometimes I'll look in a corner of one of my studios, and realize that finished items are sitting there, unlisted, because they have not been photographed. If anything, it is the photography that I find most tedious. Because there is so much of it to do, however, I must say that I have learned a few shortcuts along the way. Practice makes perfect, or if not perfect, then certainly better!

4. What does your studio/workspace look like?

I took over two bedrooms in the house, and will use the kitchen table for larger projects when necessary, such as when I'm cutting fabric. The smaller bedroom is my sewing studio, where I have two sewing machines and a mission-style writing desk. The larger bedroom is my paper crafting studio. When my son graduated from college and moved to the greater Chicago area, he left behind furniture that I recycled for storage. His dresser drawers now hold paper and fabric, as well as paper crafting tools. The bookcase holds more paper, inks, stamping supplies and surface treatment tools, and my husband added more shelves to one wall for my Cricut® supplies, chipboard, markers, paper cutting dies, paper scraps and adhesives. I truly think paper crafting supplies can take over an entire house if you allow them to do so! I purchased a cubby-style wall storage unit where I keep small items that would otherwise clutter any available horizontal spaces. There is a small couch in the paper crafting studio where I can do hand-stitching or watch how-to videos from a laptop. In a sense, I take my work wherever it's most expedient to get the job done. Sometimes that's down in the basement family room, on the sofa, where I can crochet and watch movies with my husband at the same time.

5. What do you do to relax?

I know it sounds like a cliché, but working with my hands is relaxing. What started as a collection of relaxing hobbies (sewing, crocheting, hand stitching, paper crafting) eventually became work, but the work never ceased to be relaxing. Does that make sense? Aside from that, I enjoy reading and writing. I take my Nook everywhere! And both my husband and I volunteer pretty much year-round for Iowa's Destination ImagiNation® program that encourages creativity, problem-solving and teamwork for young people from primary age through university level. At the very least, it keeps us young. Once a year, we do a week-long cabin retreat at Backbone State Park in Iowa, where we disconnect from the rest of the world (or at least the electronic world), grill outdoors every day, and take long walks.

6. What accomplishments are you the most proud of?

Where handcrafted items are concerned, I am self-taught. I graduated with a degree in English and Communication, but the first class I took afterward was for basic crochet. And of course I learned basic sewing techniques in a junior high home economics classroom where I sewed (like many others) a gingham apron and kettlecloth jumper. Both classes left a lot of room for self-instruction! Aside from working with my hands, I enjoy writing poetry, and published my first poem at the age of 45. It took that long because I had convinced myself I could not write poetry. One day, after I finished giving my son feedback for a poem he had written, I asked myself why I thought I was qualified to provide constructive criticism for poetry but did not think I was equally qualified to write it. So, I started writing and publishing poems, and never looked back.

7. What are some of your goals for the next year?

Many of the items at JN Originals are seasonal, including crocheted scarves, hats, fingerless gloves and felted wool coffee cup cozies. My goal is to expand my offerings beyond these seasonal items. I have already made a start with crocheted spa cloths and felted wool bowls, needle books, and bags, but I'd like to add felted wall flowers for home decor. At Mister PenQuin, I'd like to increase the number of offerings to 100 items or more. I have discovered that small specialty books fill a niche that blank notebooks do not, so I plan to offer more of these. I'd also like to have a "grand opening" for Dancing Thimble, where I plan to sell functional fabric-crafted items such as eReader cases, bags featuring the Swedish weaving I love to do, fabric sewing weights, and craft aprons. To be honest, I think all of this will take more than a year!

Artisan Spotlight -- KAW! Studios!

Seven questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome. . .
Kaili of KAW! Studios!

1.      What do you sell in your shop?
I sell original art & photography prints. Most, if not all of my work, is inspired by nature & wildlife. I do a lot of illustration work, with bright colors, patterns, and cute animals. I love the challenge of working in a small format, and so I create a lot of ACEOs (art cards measuring 2.5" x 3.5"). My photography primarily features natural scenes or tranquil landscapes. I also offer bookmarks, upcycled hang tags, custom work, and painted objects such as keepsake boxes & journals.

2.      What is your favorite thing about etsy?
It's a great platform for small-business artisans such as myself & this team! I love shopping there and knowing that I am supporting someone who made something by hand. It's a great place to find unique products, as well as a great place to sell your own handmade items.

3.      What is your least favorite thing about etsy?

There is an awful lot of stuff on there that would be more suited to ebay or garage sales. Nonetheless, there is more than enough relevant, original, & creative products to keep me interested in the site.

4.      What does your studio/workspace look like?

My "studio" is an art desk in my bedroom. I keep my supplies in labeled boxes on shelves nearby. Right now it is a mess, but maybe I will post a "tour" on my blog sometime :)

5.      What do you do to relax?

Drink tea and read a book. Or go on a nice walk with a dog. Or chat with friends. Music helps, too.

6.      What accomplishments are you the most proud of?

Having more than a dozen sales in my shop! Also, I've recently been featured in two local papers, which is exciting.

7.      What are some of your goals for the next year?

I'd like to have more sales in my shop, grow & engage my blog readers, and improve my skills.

Artisan Spotlight - Fabric Fascination

Seven questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

1.     What do you sell in your shop?
I sell fabric, kits, sewing tools, and pre-cut quilt blocks.

2.     What is your favorite thing about etsy?
I love the energy of having thousands of creative individuals sharing their work and ideas.

3.     What is your least favorite thing about etsy?
I would like to see the featuring of sellers on the front page and in articles be more democratic.  Maybe there could be a rotating group of sellers who would choose what shops to feature.

4.     What does your studio/workspace look like?
I have a whole room filled with fabric, sewing machines, scrapbooking supplies, knitting & crocheting projects, stamps, all kinds of papers, and miscellaneous crafting supplies.  I am a craft dabbler.

5.     What do you do to relax?
I sew, garden, swim, walk around the neighborhood, do yoga, and lately have taken up playing Words with Friends.

6.     What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
I don’t know if you would call them accomplishments, but my children and grandchildren, and of course my husband.

7.     What are some of your goals for the next year?
I would like to get more patterns and kits designed and listed in my shop, finish some sewing projects, and build up the advertising sponsorship on my tutorial blog.
