Artisan Spotlight -- Storybeader

Seven Questions is our spotlight on our favorite artisans. Please welcome...

Deb, creator of Storybeader!

1. What do you sell in your shop?
I started out on Etsy selling handmade ethnic jewelry and journals. Then in January 2011, I decided to narrow the scope of my shop and sell only paper items. The journals stayed and I learn how to make paper beads.

2. What is your favorite thing about etsy?
It's got to be the people. Many of my best friends are on Etsy, and I talk to them at least once a day. Etsy also was the reason I started to blog, so I'm really glad the "need" materialized. I love to write.

3. What is your least favorite thing about etsy?
Like everybody else has said, Etsy is just enormous and individuals get lost in the mix. Handmadeology said (as of Feb 7, 2011) there were 290,877 sellers. A good sized city. At least it's a popular site!

4. What does your studio/workspace look like?
I've basically taken over a third of our house. I have one room where my worktable is, and I write (and pay bills) there. Most of my supplies are in that room. In the living room, I have a large wooden table where I craft and put together my journals. My computer is over in the corner. Needless to say, I spend a lot of time in the living room. Good thing my DH isn't jealous of Storybeader!

5. What do you do to relax?
I unwind with my artwork and let my mind wander. Art journaling and sitting down with a book is my idea of fun. And watching the breeze.

6. What accomplishments are you the most proud of?
That has to be earning my masters (many years ago) and becoming a museum curator. I started out as a Special Collection Curator and now I‘m Head Curator at a history museum in Oklahoma. I’m very proud of winning a national award for one of the exhibitions I wrote. And I'm proud to have started my own business.

7. What are some of your goals for the next year?
On the creative front, I have a lot of paper projects I want to try. My goal is getting through at least half my list. Thing is: the list keeps growing! They include trying different bookbinding techniques and taking a watercolor class. I'd like Storybeader to reach a larger audience and turn out more products. One thing I try to keep in mind, though, is the joy of creating.

Deb, I was especially interested to see your space, since I also make journals and can't seem to contain this to one room. I felt much reassured after I saw your working space! :-)

Awesome feature, Deb! You have so many accomplishments to be proud of. I think that many of us can share in the notion of letting our crafting take over a lot of our houses. Looking forward to seeing your endeavors this next year!
